Si Gale – gale statue

The life-size and very life-like enigmatic three – dimensional
human figures are actually a type of puppet found in the
vicinity of lake Toba ( batak tribe – porsea village north tapanuli
Sumatra island) .

Si Gale gale played a special role in certain kinds of funeral
rites (papurpur sepata), si gale gale ceremonies were huge,
expensive affairs lasting as long as two weeks. Only the
wealthy and powerful could afford them.

The wooden figures with jointed limbs were mounted on large
wheeled platforms on which, weeping, they danced during
funerary ceremonies, we can see how a complex system of
wires and levers used to fit into the body, allowing the
puppeteer to create life – like movements. The mechanics
would of course have been covered by clothing.
Even the tongue on this piece was retractable .
